Secretary, Sanitary Board.

I have the honour to recommend for the favour-

aple consideration of His Excellency the Governor, that the

tees paid oy certain of the Inspectors of this Department for

the certificate of the Sanitary institute and for any classes

they have bad necessarily to attend for that purpose, .be

refunded to them as an encouragement to the staff generally

to potain these certificates. I do not refer to the Senior

Inspectors who were engaged on the condition that they

possessed such a certificate out to lospectors Brett and

Fisher who have already obtained these certificates and to

the other Inspectors who are now studying with a view to

obtaining this certificate. Hitherto it has been necessary

for these officers to proceed to England on leave in order to

obtain the certificate of the Sanitary Institute and in fact

Inspector Fisher is at present in England, out I am endeavour-

ing to induce the Sanitary Institute to allow the examinations

to be conducted locally. In any case however fees will be

required by the Institute for the issue of these certificates

and I am strongly of the opinion that the opportunity of

obtaining an insight into the working of the Public Health

Departments in England is highly beneficial to our staff and

of even more value than the mere certificate.

The fee for the examination in London is

£8.3.0. put out of London a fee of £4.4.0. is charged, while

the fees for lectures in London and the provinces are small.

The privilege extended to officers of the Colonial Medical

service
